SATURDAY NIGHT

Ryan hummed into Macie’s kiss. When did kissing become her favorite pastime? Macie’s body pressed against her tempted Ryan to take their kissing a step further. Her hand slipped beneath Macie’s shirt and slid slowly to cup her breast.

Macie’s breath caught.

“I have to touch you,” Ryan said. “Just a little. Please. I know you want to take some time. God. You feel so good against me.”

Loving Ryan eclipsed Macie’s past affairs and relationships. She bought Gina flowers and jewelry. She whispered endearments. They fell into a relationship through shared attraction and what they thought were shared values. In retrospect, Macie thought friends threw her together with Gina more than they found each other. She took women away on winter weekend escapades full of fireplaces, candlelit dinners, and wine. Romantic overtures after her relationship with Gina ended had one purpose: seduction. It surprised Macie as much as it could anyone that she wanted to wait a few breaths before taking Ryan as a lover. It would be easy to kiss her way down Ryan’s body and taste every inch of her skin until they were both left trembling. Holding back required patience and effort, two things that building a life with someone demanded. Macie wanted more than a companion for getaways or a lover to spend a few nights exploring. When she looked to the future, she saw Ryan. Her hand clasped Ryan’s and stilled its movement.

Ryan groaned. Being close to Macie was like living in heaven that bordered hell. Desire pulsed in every nerve of Ryan’s body and coiled in her belly.

“Ryan?”

“Huh?”

“Are you okay?” Macie asked.

How should Ryan answer? She wanted Macie—all of Macie.

“Ryan?”

“I’m fine.”

“Are you?”

Fuck it. “I want you, Macie. I mean, I want to touch you so much it fucking hurts.”

Macie swept Ryan’s hair aside. “And you don’t think I feel the same way?”

“I don’t know. I don’t know how much longer I can stand this.”

Macie exhaled a nervous breath. “You still think I’m putting you off, don’t you?”

Ryan struggled to push back her mounting tears. “I don’t know what I think. After our talk yesterday, I thought you were ready. I’m not Gina.”

“Look at me,” Macie said. “Please. I rushed before. Every person I’ve been with—I jumped straight into bed with them. Including Gina. I felt love or attraction, or both—and I jumped.”

“And it spelled disaster.”

“That’s not it,” Macie said. “You matter to me. We matter to me.” Macie took another deep breath and continued. “This—holding you before we make love, kissing you and feeling you before we become lovers—it’s not about holding back. It’s about holding on.”

“About being sure?”

“No.” Macie’s fingertips traced Ryan’s furrowed brow. “Not the way you think. I need to be sure you know what this means to me—what you mean to me.”

How did Macie always know what Ryan needed to hear? “I wish I didn’t have to leave tonight.”

“You don’t know how badly I wish you could stay.”

Ryan threw her head back and groaned.

“I’ll pick you up on Friday,” Macie said.

“Pick me up? Where are we going? We finished Emma’s list.
